I did two walks in May and, as always, loved hearing the migration stories and family histories of some of the participants. It might sound over the top, but I feel genuine joy when the stories I tell overlap with the life experiences of some of the lovely people who tend to come on my walks. Not one, but two participants told me they had relatives who had worked at the Perfect Cheese Company. Founded in 1930, this company is an example of the entrepreneurial spirit of many Italian migrants and I tell the story of the founders – Natale and Maria Italiano – while we enjoy a coffee and rest mid-way through the walk. Also, I was super excited to learn that the father of one of the people on my walk worked at Café Latin. Café Latin was one of Melbourne’s finest Italian restaurants and has a history dating back to the 1920s. Whatsmore, she has an extensive menu collection and is going to share this with me, and I hope to share that with you right here. So thank you to my May walkers for coming along and sharing your stories. I couldn’t be more honoured.
